Belt conveyor parts deformation research and renovation engineering

The finite element models are built up using plate elements for all structural parts (H beams, C-channels, pipes, support parts, covers, flanges). Beam elements for idlers, bolts, bolt connections. Rod elements for top flange connections. Rigid RBE2 (spider) elements for constraint connections. Type of mainly used plate elements – 4 nodes PLATE Nastran element.

A few existing conveyor constructions have been investigated due to significant deformation of some structural parts, particularly "cheek" plates.

Static load distribution taken into account by the assumption of longitudinal direction mass of cargo gives 560 kg/m.

Approximate size of plate element – ±20 mm.

For a detailed analysis of heavy loaded bolting flange connections, a few such locations are modeled with a "fine mesh" style using 3D Hex elements.

Deformations, VonMises stress, and contact pressure were analyzed in these case studies. Relevant recommendations developed and issued to the client's engineers.
